I had a problem with the Western Digital 160GB Passport Drive. Actually, bought it for my brother as his graduation gift and shipped to Australia to him. He used it for one or two week, the drive stopped working. I tried many ways to get it fix without exchanging the drive from WD because instead of a new drive, they will only ship to us a refurbished unit.
My brother brought it along with him during his trip here to try to get a replacement. We tried calling the customer service (1-800-275-4932) many times and all the times we were connected to some east Indian representative across the ocean. They have very westernized names like Shawn, David, Eric, … the list can go on. They try to speak like a westerner but they don’t understand what you trying to speak to them. And most of the time, they will tell you to speak up because they can’t hear you but you can clearly hear them loud and fine. It takes the toll of my hair because I definitely pull my hair so many times trying to get my message across to them.
After being back and forth (email and phone) with them for almost three weeks, they finally able to give me an RMA # for my drive replacement. I asked for the standard replacement service where I should be shipping my drive over before they ship me a replacement (refurbished) one. I wanted this option because I want to try first returning the drive to Sam’s club where I bought it (it has been 5 months) to see if we can get a refund/credit/exchange for a ‘new’ drive.
It was such a good experience with Sam’s Club that they gave us a refund for the not working drive, as long as we returned the whole package including box and user manual. They have a policy for return of any computer items up to 6 months. Most stores give a 30 days guarantee for refund or exchange, Target gives you a 90 days and here at Sam’s Club … you get 6 months for any computers. I should be getting most of my other electronic products from Sam’s Club next time just because they have such an extended return policy.
Anyway, the USB passport drive has a lot of problems. I’ve search online and the review is good but there are also a number of bad reviews. If you are planning to get an USB drive, you may want to check around. Although WD Passport may be the cheapest in the market, they may not able to last a long time. So read and do your research before getting this usb portable drive.
