First Playdate

First Playdate

The parenting class for the winter term has begun last Tuesday.  It was fun to see the other kids.  They seemed to have grown a bit during our three weeks break.  I actually get close to several moms in the class as our boys are very close in age, all birthdays within a month or two (except for one whose birthday falls in May).

During this first class, Colin’s mom has invited 3 moms (plus their kids) and 1 nanny (plus the little girl) to her house for a playdate the next day.  She wanted her son to get use of having people coming over in preparing him for his 2nd birthday party.  As you know, with kids is hard to know when we would be ready to go out, so she told us anytime after 9am and the playdate would end by 12pm as that’s the time her son naps.

By Wednesday morning, I was afraid Brandon was going to wake up late, but he woke up on time.  We were able to leave home around 9:30am.  I had anticipated what would happened the moment we stepped into the house.  Even when we parked the car by the visitor parking, Brandon was beginning to get upset.  He thought we were going to the mall.  Then I had him rang the bell which he did.  But when we stepped inside and went upstairs to the living room (downstair’s the garage), he began screaming and wanted to leave immediately.

The host (D), her son, another mom (Y) and her son were there and they told me it’s OK as Y was telling me her son had the same reaction when she visited D the first time.  So I sat by the sofa with Brandon on my lap trying to calm him down.  Tears were coming down and his nose was wet.  Then we found the solution.  I saw a tractor with spinning wheels and brought it to Brandon.  He likes anything that can spin well.  This tractor was able to stop him from crying. Later, the host came and brought him a helicopter, which made him a little happier. A few minutes later, he left my lap and able to walk around, but still holding to my hand. There after it was fine.

D even provided fruits for kids, snacks and coffee for the adults. It was fun to get to know more about the other moms. The nanny (C) and the toddler girl came later. And before Y had to leave, the final mother (A) and son pair arrived. We were able to take a group picture of the kids before Y had to leave.

After Y and her son left, Colin then led the 3 others up to his room. Brandon was so immersed with the stairs that he pulled me with him up and down the stairs. He is just learning climbing stairs as we don’t have stairs at home for him to practice. I still have to hold his hand while he climbs. It wasn’t too long when the clock struck 12 and we had to leave. It was a fun time for both of us. Thank you D for hosting the playdate. We are definitely looking for the next one.
