Should I get a sewing machine?

posted in Things, Myself |

sewingmachine.jpgI set my eyes on a sewing machine at Amazon (because they have free shipping and no sales tax) which I like and it is selling for $174.99. This price has just dropped from $179.99. It is the Brother 60 Stitch Computerized Free Arm Sewing Machine With Multiple Stitch Functions. I’ve been debating myself if I should get it.

Its features:

  • Computerized 60 Stitch Sewing Machine with Multiple Stitch Functions
  • LCD Display for computerized stitch selection
  • Automatic 1-step buttonholer with 7 styles of auto-size buttonholes
  • Automatic Needle Threader
  • Oversized Sewing Table included for Large Projects

The main reason why I want a sewing machine is that I can alter little stuff at home if I need to, like the length of the pants or sleeves for myself (I am petite you see). MIL has a sewing machine at her home but I can no longer can find time to go over her house freely like I used to before Brandon. I am also planning to make extra little pillows and sew some pillow cases for Brandon’s ‘wawawa‘, may be some night pants if I can. Although I can ask MIL to help me sew a few but if possible, I rather do it on my own. With this machine, it says can be used for quilting. That’s a nice hobby to learn too.

Why I debating not to get it? Limited storage space. I don’t want to have another thing in our home that I may end up not using as much as I planned to. My house is currently filled with so much things that I’ve bought and not used, and also with Brandon’s toys and stuff. Will I be able to find the time to be able to get my project done? That’s another reason too.

It is a difficult decision to make.

this is one thing i almost bought before i fell pregnant with Bee. i will definitely buy one when the little girl has grown up a bit more. i love sewing but dunno how to make dresses, haha! wah u can sew night pants, very “panai” ah u :D

Night pants easy only, cut cut both side same pattern, then sew them together. Saw my mom did them when she was sewing for my younger brother. hehhee

if dun have buy one and keep la..i also keep one.. aiyah that day bought new pair of pants belum alter lagi…so lazy to take out the sewing machine..

Will buy one when I know which brand or which sewing machine to get. MIL said Brother no good.

I would buy one.. if i didn’t have to man the store. It is very useful.. because down here hor.. no tailor..!

Here got tailor, but expensive to alter. Almost the same price at the pants I bought.

i will definitely get one, actually i am picking one up soon. but i am the kind of person that dont do online shopping for this kind of thing, as i rather go to the store, and test it out. also since i live up here, i tend to negotiate the warranty and it works all the time. FWIW, when i bought the Wii, the original warranty is 30 days in store, but told the lady at future shop, i live up here and told her to extend it to 90 days since i dont want to deal with Nintendo cause may take longer and she said no issue. but am lucky the Wii was fine and no need to return.

Thanks for the tip, I will definitely check it out at the store before purchasing online.

No need to buy la..have hubby buy for you as Christmas gift. I’m sure he’s reading this post now..hehehe…

You see his comment lar. lol

Vien, if she buys it, it is going to go to my credit card anyways. It will be a good Christmas gift though.

Stop, don’t buy it for me as Christmas gift. Your mom said no good the Brother’s brand sewing machine. She said for ‘Kids’ (like a toy) one. *shake head*

heheehhe…so the final decision is not to buy isit?

    Yup, not to buy YET.

  8. 8 Tot's Mom noted:

I’m shy to say this but all I can sew is loose buttons on shirts. Not anything more than that. Sad, huh??

Don’t worry, I use to only able to do that too. It is not that difficult to learn to sew using the sewing machine. You may want to try it when you have the time.

A sewing machine sure comes in handy. I fix all my pillows with an old machine yesterday. No need to buy new ones. Next project, I will sew a set of new cushion covers.

Wah .. cushion covers! I dunno how to sew zipper yet, so cushion covers will be a tough one for me. But now, still need to find a machine that is good for beginner as well as able to pick up thicker fabric.

I’m going to get one when I have my own house.
Good for alteration… simple stuff at least.
If Brother not good, get a SINGER. :P

I will check out Singer. May be I should go to Joann to check out their available sewing machines in store and try hands on.

  12. 12 Shooi noted:

Wahh…sew clothes. All i have done with the sewing machine is simple projects like cushion/ tissue box covers, pencil cases, etc.

I learned from MIL sewing PJs and tee shirts.

If you have enough money in Paypal.. go for it..

If you don’t.. I think you still really want it to right? If you can utilise it, I think it’ll be worth it.

I want it but then I don’t know if I would use it as much as I would want to. Worry that I may not able to find time to do such project.

get one and it’s very useful for altering household items and garments. I regret not learning from my mum who’s a seamstress and that time we have all sort of sewing machines at home. My family was in textile line before… i want to pick up sewing and other needlework as much as I could. it’s always prettier and cheaper to DIY!
