Safety Issue with Children Toys

Recently there has been a recall on over a million of Fisher Price toys made in China due to Lead Paint issue.  Lead which is also known as Plumbum (Pb) is a highly toxic metal that may cause some health issue, especially for young children.  Young children are highly are risk because they are still growing and Lead poisoning may cause developmental issues including learning disabilitiesa and behavioral problem, and worse seizures or even death.

When products are made in China, sometimes we have to think are these products safe?  Did the manufacturer actually follow the quality control regulations for producing the product.  When we see an imprint, “Made in China”, what is in your mind?  In my mind, “This is a low quality product,” because I know a lot of Chinese manufacturers (not all) will cut corners to lower their production costs.  But we find probably more than 70% (could be higher) of products are made in China in the market today and mostly children’s toys.

You are a mom, probably have seen that your kids put everything inside their mouth, toys included.  What if the paint chipped off?  What if the paint is lead based paint?  Well, is good that in USA, the big toys companies like Fisher Price will do quality check on their items on regular basis.

But what if those toys we bought at pasar malam or street vendors at swapmeet/flea market?  I know they still sell children toys at these location, and probably 99% of these toys are made in China.  Are there quality control on these ‘non-branded’ toys - the masak-masak or the kid golf clubs set?  Is there a way to prevent our previous little ones from Lead exposure?  Let’s discuss about this.
